24: The Return Comes January 2009


NEW YORK - Fans of the Fox drama "24" will have to wait until next January to see Jack Bauer again, this season's most prominent casualty of the writers strike.

The network has committed to air a full season on consecutive weeks, and had been planning to start last month. Eight episodes were filmed before the strike, but if Kiefer Sutherland returned to airwaves now, the season finale would not take place until the summer, when TV networks rarely show high-profile programs.

Somewhat implausibly, Fox cited viewer wishes as a reason for the delay. Another reason networks prefer to break bad news via press release: It's easier to keep a straight face
